When the initial eruptions of the volcanoes subsided, water running from the snow capped mountains cooled the molten lava and left a layer of black obsidian rock running from the base of the volcano and mountain range to the foot of the great rain forest. The resulting layer of rock is coral-like in structure and allows both lava and water rivers to flow through its cavernous foundation. The surface of the rock is barren but for a few forms of cactus and other plant life while hidden within the caverns and below this new layer of earth are vast natural resource deposits.

These deposits attracted the humans as they were constructing Etheria. Humans who established mining towns scattered throughout the desert mined metals, minerals, and other substances needed to construct a technologically advanced kingdom. However, twenty-five years ago, humans began mysteriously disappearing. As the populations of the mining towns seemed to vanish into thin air, a mass evacuation took place returning all surviving humans back to Etheria.

Within the last ten years, reptilian New Breeds looking for fortune took over the abandoned mining towns. Today, they resemble the old world's wild west towns in both appearance and social structure. New Breeds from all over come to stake their claim in the rugged and ruthless Black Desert.
