Mantis grew up in an Etherian Police household. His mother is a hand-to-hand combat instructor at the Police Academy and his father is a detective. Mantis followed his parents and joined the Etherian Police while still in his teens. He demonstrated a quick mastery of his mother's combat style, and proved to excel in potentially disastrous situations.

His ability to effortlessly take control of the situation at hand and subdue anyone that stood in his way led to a promotion to the ranks of Shadowhunter. During his field training, Mantis integrated airborne flight skills with his unique fighting style to become one of the most resourceful soldiers in the Corp.
